Olympus Camedia c5050 zoom

My second digital camera, bought it new in early 2003. Ridiculy expensive by todays measure… A very good camera and I enjoyed using it for 3 years and at least 10000 pictures. If the digital agfa e 1680 had made me interested in photography, this was the camera that made the interest explode.
The only problem I encountered with it was that I wore out the on off switch. The last year I used it it was very difficult to turn it on. Usually, the opportunity I wanted to capture was long gone when the camera finally came alive.
It had a bright lens but as all digital cameras at the time the autofocus was a little slow.

Some technical info:
minimum aperture at wide angel is f1.8
5 Megapixel sensor
folding screen, very useful when taking pictures from a frogs perspective. No need to lay down flat on the ground anymore.
slots for XD-card, Smart Media card and compact flash. I mainly used it with a small hard drive from IBM, 1 GB big. Very good value for money at the time when a regular cf-card was ridiculosly expensive…

Agfa Ephoto 1680

My first digital camera and the one that woke my interest in photography, bought on a sale at Clasohlson 1999, a well known swedish supplier of technical toys and tools. It was a little outdated when I got it so it wasnt too expensive, only about 1300 kronor. That was rather cheap for a compact camera back then. If you where an amateur like me and wanted a digital camera a compact was your only choice. The digital SLR:s was way too expensive to even be considered at the time.
It uses regular AA batteries and takes decent pictures, probably because of its lens, a 38-114mm f2.8-f3.5 zoom. The only problem is its painfully slow autofocus. By the time the camera is focused, your target has disappeared long ago.
The memorycard used is a Smart Media The first one I got had room for four megabytes, yes four… Then I bought two cards that could store 16 MB each, at 640×480 resolution and jpg the total of 36 MB was more than enough to make it through a couple of weeks on holiday. If you used the full resolution, 1280×960 , and saved them as tif-images you had to be very selective when choosing what to shoot because then the memorycard filled upp quick.

Zeiss Ikon Box tengor 54/2

This is another camera that has a place close to my heart. It used to belong to my grandfather that I liked very much. Unfortunately he died too young at sixtyfive when I was only nine years old. I later got it as a gift from my grandmother.

I guess this was the kind of camera a young mailman like my granddad could afford in the early thirthies. Its simple but has some nice features. There are three apertures, f11, f18 and f25 but only one shutterspeed, if you dont count the bulb setting as a speed. There is three focusing zones, 1m, 4m and infinity. The film used is 120 and the size of the negative is 6×9 cm.

My granddad used it quite a lot but unfortunately I dont have any images scanned from it. Someday I will put a film in it and give it a try, I promise…

Ihagee Varex IIb and EXA 1A

When my father in law came to visit this summer he brought with him a paperbag full of cameras. Thats a very nice thing to bring, Im thinking about asking all visitors to do that… Anyway, two of the cameras in the bag was this Exakta Varex IIb and EXA 1A. Very nice cameras from the Dresden based manufacturer Ihagee.

The manufacturer is famous for being among the first with a consistent system thinking. Almost all parts of their system where compatibel with each other from the late 30:s to the early 70:s.

Along with the cameras in the bag were some lenses and finders: two Domiplan 2.8/50 lenses, one “aus Jena” 4/135 telephoto lens, one soligor 3.5/35 wide angle lens, two hooded finders, one prism finder and one set of macro extension rings. Also included with the cameras where instruction manuals and a reciept from the store in Helsingborg where an old relative to my father in law both the equipment in the 60:s.

When I was visiting one of the stores of the salvation army in stockholm a couple of weeks ago I found a tele-converter with the inscription: bifocar tele-converter w-germany. Seems like my collection of exakta stuff is growing slowly but steady…

Last weekend I loaded the Varex IIb with some black and white film but the weather was to bad to take pictures outdoors so its still mainly unexposed. I will post some samples from the film as soon as they are exposed and developed.

There is a lot written about Exakta cameras on the net and as usual camera-wiki.org is a good start. Other informative websites is www.wrotniak.net and exakta.org.

Heres a pic of the whole collection I got from my father in law:

Ricoh 500GX

Ricoh 500 GX

Found this beauty at a flea market arranged by the local football or icehockey team in Hemse (Yes I know, I should know which sport it was but Im totally uninterested in sport so I dont…) Nearly missed it since a kid at about ten saw it at the same time as me and managed to get his hands on it before me. For a short while I considered to rip it out of his hands and run but luckily I came to my senses and didnt. After a short while he put it down so I could grab it. My precious…

Ricoh 500 GX

The lens was hanging a little loose but since it seemed to work anyway I bought it and brought it home for a closer inspection. It turned out that a screw was loose inside and after I dissassembled the lens I managed to screw it back in. Put a battery and a film in it and went out to take pictures. Seems to work very well as you can see from the samples below. It will need a replacement of the light seals though, there is some signs of light leaks on the film. Heres a link on how to do that.

Ricoh 500 GX

Its supposed to use a PX675 mercury battery like so many other cameras from the seventies but luckily there is a cheap zinc-air replacement for that batterytype available today.

The main advantage over my other compact 35mm cameras is that this one has a metered manual mode and it is possible to use it in manual mode without a battery if you want to.

Meikai AR-4367

This is one of the latest additions to my collection: A camera so crappy it might be good. Its made of plastic, has a motordrive and you cant make any adjustments to the exposure. Theres one aperture and one time. The camera looks like it has at least four different apertures but I cant figure out any way to change it. Theres nothing that moves exept for the shutterrelease and the film rewind button. I even dissasembled it to be really sure… If anyone knows how its supposed to work your input will be very welcome.

Maybe they used the same lens on other cameras with the feature of four apertures? Information on this site ( Virtuelles Kamera-Museum Kurt Tauber Sammlung) seems to indicate that.

One sure sign of a quality camera is if you find weights in it to make it feel heavier. This ones got one as you can see from the pictures below.

I havent decided yet if I should try it out with a film or just put it on the shelf. There are a few other cams in my collection that Im more eager to try out…

It looks a lot like a copy of a Minolta 5000, as you can see here:
